President,
Board of Directors Thomas M. Sweeney II, MD, PhD
CEO and Medical Director
Southeastern Spine Center and Research Institute 
Dr. Sweeney is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and
an accomplished and leading authority in Minimally Invasive
Spine Surgery (MISS). A fellowship trained spine surgeon,
he earned his medical degree and PhD in anatomy at the
University of Virginia and completed a research fellowship
at the National Institute of Health. He has been published
extensively, including new methods on bone healing, and
is recognized as a national speaker on disorders and surgical
procedures of the spine.

Member Heidi Godman News
Anchor & Medical Editor
ABC7 News, WWSB

Heidi is an award-winning medical journalist and serves
as medical editor for ABC television’s Sarasota
affiliate. She is the first TV broadcaster in the country
to be named a journalism fellow of the American Academy
of Neurology. She has earned numerous awards for her work,
including two honors for excellence in cardiovascular
communications from Florida’s American Heart Association.
She earned a journalism degree from West Virginia University.

Board
Member John A. Owen, EdD, MS
Assistant Professor of Research in Medical Education
University of Virginia School of Medicine

Dr. Owen serves as Research Director for the Center for
the Advancement of Generalist Medicine at the University
of Virginia. An accomplished educator and administrator,
he has been published and has presented on a wide range
of medical education subjects. He earned his doctorate
degree in education and masters degrees in Epidemiology,
Educational Administration and Supervision, and English
Education from the University of Virginia.

Executive
Director Gordon Greenfield

Gordon directs business operations for the National Spine
Foundation and is responsible for fundraising, marketing
and finances. He has extensive experience managing corporate
marketing and sales programs. Previously, he was Vice
President of Marketing for Cheetah Technologies, a senior
associate with the international consulting firm Global
Insight, and a managing partner in an advertising agency.
He has an MBA from Cornell University and a journalism
degree from Northeastern University.

Research
Director David L. Scott, MD, PhD

Dr. Scott is responsible for all research activities of
the National Spine Foundation. He is also an instructor
at Harvard Medical School and on staff at Massachusetts
General Hospital. Dr. Scott is an orthopedic surgeon and
spine fellow. He earned his medical degree from Yale University
and a PhD for arthritis-related thesis work from the University
of Chicago.

Director,
Education and Community Affairs Brenda Brouillette,
RN, BS

Brenda is responsible for the foundation’s educational
and community events. She has over 10 years experience
in non-profit educational event planning, in addition
to her extensive clinical background and marketing experience
in the healthcare arena. Previously, she was with Sarasota
Memorial Healthcare System as Physician Relations Specialist
and Marketing Representative. Brenda also serves as Vice
President of Business Development for Southeastern Spine
Center & Research Institute. She earned a bachelors
degree in Healthcare Leadership from National Lewis University.
